The Big Spanish Brunch kicks off at José by Pizarro the first Saturday of every month, and it’s a must-try for Spanish food lovers. The singer is absolutely excellent and the restaurant is small and intimate enough to ensure an immediate vibe.

The phrase ‘melt in the mouth’ could’ve been invented for the croquetas del dia, while the Gordal olives stuffed with orange were a perfect blend of salt and citrus.

Pan con tomate - another Catalonia speciality - is a dish we order on every visit, so we were stoked to see it on the brunch line up: the combination of crunchy bread topped with grated tomato and garlic is simple but perfect in its execution. Signature tortilla de patata (Spanish omelette with eggs, potatoes and caramelised onion) was a standout.

We were treated to short rib paella with saffron paprika aioli, and boy did it deliver! The short rib was fall-apart tender, with a brilliant smokiness that permeated the paella - all the way to the last forkful of crispy edges.

Chocolate truffles packed a proper cocoa punch, but it was Jose’s iteration of Basque cheesecake that really capped off the evening. Accompanied by the most delightful strawberry ice cream with fresh strawberries and drops of basil oil, it was a great way to finish!

As well as tasty red and white sangrias - it would be rude not to! - there are excellent wines on the menu, and a delicious cava if you’re feeling celebratory and spring for the premium package.

Simultaneously elegant and relaxed, it’s the perfect Saturday date night or evening with friends - both were in abundance around us, and tables book up fast … don’t sleep on this one!
